Sezane Gaspard Cardigan Review

The Sezane Gaspard Cardigan is Sezane’s popular signature cardigan. It is the one that you see francophile bloggers rave about. It is also notably designed to be worn either with the buttons at the front or the back. My Sezane Gaspard Cardigan Review will share what I like and don’t like about this knit.

Sezane Gaspard Cardigan Review

The Sezane Gaspard Cardigan is a mohair and alpaca mix with basic rib knitting. There are mother of pearl buttons and an open almost boatneck neckline. This knit is soft to the touch with minimal itch factor.

It is also shockingly warm for the style due to the alpaca content and density of the knit.

One of the big selling features of this knit is that it can be worn both with the buttons at the front or back. In fact I think wearing the sweater backwards almost makes it more interesting with the buttons down the back of the sweater. Sezane has also only tacked on the tag which means if you are going to wear it both ways you can remove the tag so that it isn’t a bother when worn at the front.

When I was taking these pictures I quickly turned this sweater around while I was outside to show both ways. If I were to do it again I would button the sweater all the way to the top instead of having one button popped. But you can get the idea of how cute the sweater is backwards.

Is the Sezane Gaspard Cardigan Worth the Hype?

The Gaspard cardigan is very soft and warm. It isn’t a thick chunky knit so you can easily layer it under everything. In fact this sweater has similar versatility to a thin classic cashmere, with similar softness. It is a good quality basic which leads to its popularity.

For me the drawback of this knit is the open neckline. I wish it weren’t so open on my shoulders. I wish it were closer to a crewneck. Part of this is comfort factor. Part of it is I can’t layer a t-shirt underneath. The neckline is so open I have to go with a camisole. I have similar feelings about the Barry which is the v-neck version of the Gaspard.

Size wise I took a large which is my smaller Sezane size. The sizing recommendation is if you are between two sizes take the size below. I would say this is spot on. There isn’t any pulling or popping buttons and this sweater isn’t meant to fit loose or oversized.

Overall I get why the Gaspard is popular however due to the neckline it isn’t my favourite Sezane knit.
