Where to stay in the Gaspé Peninsula ⋆ chic everywhere

Driving the Gaspé Peninsula is one of those epic Canadian road trips that everyone should take at least once. But you can't exactly set up in Montreal and make it a day trip. We spent 8 days driving from Southwestern Ontario around the Gaspé Peninsula and back. This is where to stay in the Gaspé Peninsula.

Where to Stay in the Gaspé Peninsula

When road tripping through the Gaspé Peninsula you can easily spend 5 to 10 days exploring depending on how many nights you stay in each area, what you want to see and where you are starting from. Our family of 4 started west of Toronto in Ontario so we had one night at the beginning and end of our tour outside of Montreal to break up the driving.

One thing to note is that there are no major hotel chains in the Gaspésie region. There are motels, Gîte, cottages and camping options. We stayed at a regional chain Riôtel, the have motel options in Matane, Percé and Carleton sur Mer.

These three motels allowed us to have 3 good stopping points for our planned travels. I will share all the hotels we stopped along the way from South western Ontario and back.

Courtyard Montreal Brossard - This was our first stop and was about 6 hours from our starting point. But we stopped along the way to experience a 1000 islands cruise out of Brockville and charge our EV. So by the time we pulled in it was later in the afternoon. What I liked about this property is that we had free charging in the underground parking and the room was at the standard we have come to expect from Marriott properties. The one drawback was it was a bit busier than I expected to get into the hotel and the parking area. But once we figured that out we had a comfortable stay for the night with lots of restaurant options and a bakery close by for pain au chocolate in the morning. The big perk about this hotel is that it right off the highway to get back on easily the next day.

Riotel Matane - This Riotel property is right on the St. Lawrence river. It looks the most like a hotel of the 3. The rooms are renovated and modern looking. The only issue I would say is that the washroom has glass walls so that you can see whomever is showering in the rest of the room. But they put blinds on to provide some privacy but honestly it just made things look worse. I would have just frosted or applied a privacy film over the glass. Otherwise the bathroom had a decent amount of space. There is free EV charging on site.

Riotel Percé - We stayed in Percé for two nights and we stayed in a family suite which gave us a king bed, double bed and pull out couch. This was my favourite of the 3 Riotel properties and yet I forgot to take pictures of the room! Again comfortable beds, the bathroom was smaller but modern and renovated. Percé is the most touristy of the towns in Gaspésie and there are lots of accommodation options. What I liked about Riotel Percé is that the hotel is at the far end of the walkable part of town so there are less crowds but you can easily walk everywhere you need to go downtown. This hotel is right on the beach (although no one was swimming) and has an amazing view of Percé Rock. Make sure to sit on the restaurant deck and take in the view. There is free EV charging for guests.

Riotel Carleton sur Mer - this is the newest Riotel motel. We had a comfortable room but this was the one that the rooms really felt like a road side motel even if they have been recently renovated. That said this was the property that I didn't have my choice of rooms because everything was booked up already! This hotel was right on the beach and has rooms on the beach and across the street from the beach where the restaurant and front desk are located. There was free EV charging stations for guests. We at the the hotel restaurant for dinner and everyone had a great meal.

Hotel Le St-Germain Rimouski - Originally when I planned this road trip we planned to stop in Rimouski so that we could get up early the next day and take the ferry in Rivere du Loup to the other side of the St. Lawrence river to continue our journey. I had read EV cars got free ferry passage BUT what I didn't realize is that you have to pay for each passenger AND your car. So we would still have to pay for the ferry crossing. After finding this out on our road trip we decided to just cross at Levis and skip the ferry. Our hotel in Rimouski was lovely and was more of a long stay type room as there was a kitchen in the room. I wish I had taken a picture of the front lobby because it has the feel of a high end hotel. Again we had free EV charging and the location was super central to many restaurant options.

Le Baluchon - this eco resort was a bit off the beaten track and not exactly just off the highway. That said it was a gorgeous spot that we could have easily stayed more nights and enhanced our road trip. It probably would have been smarter to just stop at the same Marriott that we stopped at on the start of our road trip but I had really wanted to stop here and see this hotel in person. I will do a more in depth review another time but if you are into hiking and biking and other outdoor adventures this is a great spot. Even just sitting by the pool here has a totally different vibe. We got a room with 2 king sized beds which was great for everyone comfort wise. The bathroom was large. Indoor pool and outdoor pool options. Two restaurants on site. There is even trails with a waterfall! And yes free EV charging on site.

One property that I wished we had of stopped at was the Gite Mont Albert. The ski chalet vibe was something that drew me in and the location in the mountains would have been a great change to the seaside stops we had been making for the rest of the trip.
