Sezane Emile Cardigan Review

Sezane launched their Emile Cardigan late last year. It is an update to the Achille cardigan. Tweaked fit and a crew neckline as opposed to the more open v neckline of the Achille. While I never really thought of myself as a cardigan person the Emile is changing me. This is my Sezane Emile Cardigan Review.

Sezane Emile Cardigan Review

The Sezane Emile Cardigan comes in a number of colours and has a rib knit with slight balloon sleeve. The sweater is an alpaca and wool mix.

The Emile Cardigan is the “little brother” of the Achille, one of Sezane’s popular styles. It has a less oversized fit. The Achille was very slouchy. I find the Emile is more of a relaxed style not oversized. The Emile has a round collar not a v neck. They both have the beaded rib knit. There is a balloon sleeve but not dramatically so.

What I like about the Emile, and other Sezane cardigans really, is that they are designed to be worn closed. More like a button down sweater. Many cardigans I have owned in the past were designed more to be worn open almost just on your shoulders. Something to throw over a dress in the summer. These tiny cardigans would never be worn like how I am wearing the Emile cardigan.

I got the Emile in the extra large. The size advice from Sezane is to size down if you are between sizes. I would say that if you want a relaxed fit stick with your usual size. Size down if you want a more fitted look. I wanted a relaxed fit and I can confirm this knit fees roomy. After wearing this more I can say that there is loads of room in this sweater through the torso. I easily could have gone with a large and the sweater still would not have been slim or tight.

This knit hits me at my waist or ever so slightly below my waist. This makes this sweater easy to do a half tuck without having to wrestle with excessive bulky fabric.

The Emile Cardigan has a fluffy or fuzzy texture. But it is softer and less itchy than the Sezane sweaters that have mohair.

It has a chunkier knit than I was expecting. I think I was expecting something similar to the Sezane fancy knit cardigans (like this or this) but it is bulkier than those. That said because it is made of Alpaca it feels light and not heavy in weight.

sezane emile cardigan review

I really like the Emile cardigan. It has completely made me rethink cardigans all together. I think if more were made like Sezane makes them I would have been on board a long time ago. I like when I layer this sweater under a coat there is more visual interest with the button front. In fact Sezane’s styling these cardigans more like a button front blouse has me doing the same.

I like the soft feel of the yarn. I like the tone on tone buttons. I like the length. I love the red colour. It is a nice mix of blue red and orange red. Doesn’t really skew one way or the other too much. I think it is a gorgeous colour.

What do you think of the Emile Cardigan?

PS if you want the v neck version of this cardigan try the Basile. If you want the jumper version of this cardigan try the Jose.

Thanks so much for your review of this cardigan! I've been eyeing it up online, and it was great to read your thoughts on it. I'm pretty new to Sezane, having only even bought one piece. Do you find their sizing is fairly accurate? Do you generally take the size recommended on their size chart? And would you consider posting the measurements for this cardi, especially the bust measurement? Thanks so much, and thanks again for the great review!

I do find their sizing fairly accurate. I wear a size 12 US on top and I go between ordering a Large and extra Large for their knitwear. Their sizing comments are usually spot on. If something is more slim fit I always go with the extra large. If like this sweater it recommends to go down a size if you are between sizes I can go either way. I chose the extra large this time because I wanted a relaxed oversized fit. I could have easily fit the large and it still wouldn't have been tight. So yes I do take the size recommended on the size chart but since I am between sizes I pay close attention to the sizing recommendations for each item.
