A Whole Lotta Orange; tone on tone and mixing prints

I have been wanting to pair this top and skirt together for a while now. They are light years apart in terms of styles, brands, when I bought them and where.

The top is Joe Fresh from this Spring season and the skirt is old (probably about 5 years old) from Diane von Furstenburg. One came from the grocery store, the other from Holt Renfrew, albeit a sale rack.

Even though the oversized check kind of clashes with the more modern print of the skirt, I think because they are almost the same colour they work together. To me the top says country while the skirt says city.

I paired the orange with a bunch of browns and army green to tone it down a bit.

Outfit details: Top Joe Fresh, Skirt DVF (old but like this one), Jacket Club Monaco, clutch vintage from I Miss You, watch asos, bracelets vintage from Absolutely, Ring from Pho Pa.

Do you pair items together that seem like they shouldn't go but they do?
