Where to eat at Baha Mar if you are on a Budget

Baha Mar is not an all inclusive resort. And your budget can easily run away with you if you are constantly eating out for every meal. And yet since the rooms are hotel rooms and not apartment style that includes any kitchen or fridge eating out seems like the only option. While there is a mix of price points when it comes to the restaurant offerings you can easily break the budget at one of the higher end dine in options. This is where to eat at Baha Mar if you are on a Budget.

Where to eat at Baha Mar if you are on a Budget

Sam’s Crispy Chicken – this is the first place we ate when we arrived at the resort. We were looking for something lunch related and this fit the bill. This is in the waterpark section in The Market. Sandwiches range from $14 USD to $16 USD and sides are extra. Portions are smaller here than the other places we ate so don’t come here looking to have leftovers unless you buy extra.

The Swimming Pig – this is one of the more affordable sit down restaurants. It is in the main Grand Hyatt building over towards the Rosewood. Prices are moderate especially compared to some of the high end restaurants. Where we were able to save was the portions are large enough to have leftovers for he next day saving us from having to buy lunch again. The atmosphere was very much an American Pub feeling.

Pizza Lab – If you are looking to save the budget I can’t suggest strongly enough to go to Pizza lab early in your stay. Don’t share a pizza, each get your own and then you will have loads of leftovers to use for lunches. The pizzas were pretty good too. We got the largest size each so that we would have left overs for the next few days.

Sugar Factory – Sugar Factory is supposedly the most instagrammed restaurant in America. I am pretty sure it isn’t this particular location but what do I know. They do have some cute novelty set ups that very much lend themselves to be instagrammed. As well as loads of novelty drinks. We went for the burgers. However this restaurant was a slight fail as the cheese burger my husband had had a cheese sauce dumped all over the outside of the burger. My husband is not a sauce guy. So he was annoyed that this is what the cheese burger was. And it isn’t super clear from the menu nor did the waitress warn him before he finalized his order. It was very messy to eat. I don’t remember what burger I got to be honest. I think it was the blue cheese burger. It was a much better choice and delicious. No left overs though from this restaurant.

El Jefe – this is the Mexican food truck and it might have been my favourite meal of our stay. The food trucks are very popular during the lunch hours. It seems like they extended the hours as the food trucks used to close early around 5 meaning that you would have to hit them up for an early dinner. The hours are now listed until 7 which makes so much more sense! I got the burrito bowl and my husband got a burrito. The portions were large enough that we had leftovers for the next day.

Street Bird – this is another food truck on the beach. This one does list closing at 5 pm so take that into account. This was out last meal of our stay. I had the crispy chicken sandwich and I thought it was fantastic. Personally I preferred Street Bird over Sam’s Crispy Chicken. The portions were decent enough but a this point we weren’t worried about saving leftovers as we were heading home the next morning. The food trucks are the most affordable option at this resort.

Other tips and tricks to save money on your Baha Mar Food Budget

Stop for drinks and groceries – We stopped at the beer store in the Airport before we got our transportation to the hotel. We got beer and cola. We made the mistake of not also stopping at a grocery store for snacks and breakfast foods. And we decided against walking off the resort.

Pack a cooler – there are no mini fridges in the rooms. At least not in the Grand Hyatt where we stayed. You can rent one but since we were only keeping our leftovers and drinks cold we were able to make due with ice and the cooler. We also packed some reuseable zip lock bags. Some we used to hold ice so that the cooler wasn’t filled with water as the ice melted through the day. Some we used to keep our leftovers.

Great points, Jane! We were at Grand Hyatt Baha Mar aorund the same time as you. The mandatory 25% tax and tip on all food & drink is tough, especially if you don't know about it.

Our 1st meal was at Streetbird and we had a VERY different experience than you. Our 3 chicken strips were thin and overcooked. Not at all what we expected for $20.75! At least we brought free water from our room so we didn't have to pay another $5 for water!

We're right there with you on stopping to shop on the way to the resort. Our driver took us to the supermarket he uses and I think that snacks/drinks from there saved us a few $100's.

lol at taking a cooler & ziploc's. We do that on every vacation!

Baha Mar is super expensive but if you're frugal, you don't have to break the bank. Our bill for our 4 night stay was only $629 including a nice dinner at Marcus and 2 loungers at Baha Bay Beach Club. Much nicer loungers than the "free" beach chairs!

That is too bad that you didn't have a good experience at Streetbird! It was very slow service and I think they easily got overwhelmed which isn't great when you have so many people at the resort!

We don't usually have to bring a cooler when we travel to the Caribbean because we usually opt for all inclusive so it is a bit of a mental shift.
