What to wear in Spring when it is still Cold

Transition seasons are always tough to dress for. It can be frosty first thing in the morning and then twenty degrees Celsius by 3 pm. We also want to change up what we are wearing because we have grown tired of the same old winter clothing. I will share how I ease into dressing for spring in what to wear in spring when it is still cold.

By early April I have usually put away the heaviest of my winter coats. I am wearing my winter boots less and less and can get away with bare ankles some days. I am starting to cycle in my trench coat and am wearing my lighter double faced wool coats on the chilliest days. These are my 5 tips for dressing in Spring when it is cold.

What to Wear in Spring when it is still Cold

  1. Layer up – Whether it is layering chunky knits under my rain coat or thin knits under my trench I am still wearing sweaters at this time of year. I tend not to wear my heaviest of knits anymore unless it is cold and rainy. I find thin knits fit best under trench coats as they aren’t often cut roomy. It is also a good time to start adding cotton knits back into rotation (like this). Rainy days in early spring are cold. And I don’t find rain coats to be very warm. A puffer liner or chunky knits will work wonders to keep the cold out while the rain coat keeps the wet out.
  2. Wear thin wool scarves – I put away my big thick scarves when the snow storms stop. Instead I opt for thinner wool scarves like this or this. I have even found some amazing options at Zara. These scarves are great for keeping your neck warm in the early morning or windy days. Even later in the day when you might not need to bundle these scarves add a pop of colour to finish off your look.
  3. Wear double faced wool – I have seen many complaints from people that double faced wool coats like this aren’t warm enough for winter. I beg to differ because if you layer them up they are perfectly warm especially if you are just driving to the office or running errands. In the spring they are the perfect warmer layer. They look polished and if you are wearing a lighter outfit this type of coat will be much warmer than a trench.
  4. Wear a blazer coat – this in between weather is great time for blazers. But I am talking about the wool blazer coat styles (like this) not the thinner styles you wear around the office.
  5. Don’t put your socks away yet – while there might be days that I go sockless with loafers most of the time in early spring I am still wearing socks and booties. I may be able to put away my winter boots but I still need rain boots, runners and ankle boots.

By May our spring weather is warming up quite a bit but late March and April temperatures have a wide range even within the same days. Having the right accessories and layers will allow you to stay warm when the weather hasn’t quite caught up with the spring we want.
