Hot or Not; Fall Trends to Try on and Pass on

When a new season approches it is time to look at the trends you want to participate in and those you want to just leave at the store.

Sometimes a trend just doesn’t feel fresh anymore and past its prime. Others just aren’t being executed all that well by retailers. Some are just not as easy to find anymore.

These are the trends that I think are still hot and those that are just not anymore.

fall trends hot or not

So all the “Hot” trends are on the left and the “Not” trends are on the right. Some of these are opposites of each other to emphasize what is hot or not, others are stand alone items.

So lets start with the trends I think are on the way out, or are simply not where I am spending my money this season.

First off sneaker wedges. I will admit I have a pair, but what I don’t like about this trend now is that is over saturated and most of the styles that are being produced are god awful. The trend started with the Isabel Marant versions and I still think they look super cool but they are very different from the super high heel, slim version in cobalt blue above. The Marant ones are chunky and have a lower heel and look more street than a wanna be high heel. So for me the sneaker wedge is one trend where you want to tread lightly.

The HOT sneaker trend is going towards the slipper sneaker or simply a classic high top.

The next trend that I think has fizzeled is the collar necklace. For that matter I think that the whole peter pan shirt collar, little girl look was over done last year and I am over it. Statement necklaces yes, even more so a movement towards more delicate necklaces but this collar necklace is a no go for me.

Printed denim and I have had a good run, but this is another trend that I am not going to be investing in this year. When it comes to denim my tastes are gravitating more towards classic colours like blue, black, grey and white.

I just think printed pants (ie fabrics and cuts other than a denim skinny jean) are more flattering and I do think we will see this endure for a while longer, especially the whole dressy brocade pant, but otherwise printed denim really doesn’t feel fresh anymore.

This is the hardest one for me to admit just isn’t on trend right now; the slouchy bag. I tend to gravitate towards larger slouchy soft leather styles but the styles that are trending right now are more structured and boxy. Think Philip Lim’s Pashli, the Celine Tote or even small cross body bags.

One trend that I haven’t really touched on is Peplum. Personally every time I think this trend has been over done I see a peplum look I fall for and then I don’t know what to think. We are going to see it in stores a ton this fall, but tread lightly as I don’t think it has much more longevity.

Moving onto the HOT Trends.

Boyfriend coats that are more over-sized and do not emphasize the waist without some help from a belt are going to continue to be trendy this year. Menswear inspired separates are always in style but alot of women tend to go for the whole fit and flare coat. What I like about the menswear, over-sized look is it easily accommodates winter layers.

Leather. There are so many hot leather trends right now, it is hard to know where to invest your money. Maybe just save up for it all. I am loving the whole slouchy leather pant trend that took off in the spring. If you feel like this trend doesn’t have staying power you can always go for the leather legging which is a classic.

Leather sleeves are still big but we aren’t really seeing alot of leather sleeve trench coats this time around. It is more  wool or textured blazers and biker jackets with leather sleeves. This is a easy trend to fake with a vest over a leather jacket if you just want to make due with what you already have.

Before I hear what trends you think are hot and which are not I want to touch on some classics that are always touted as trends in the fall.

So the classics that I think you should have in your wardrobe before you pay much attention to any trends are a great Trench Coat, some plaid or check and a black leather biker. These are items that you can keep wearing and reinventing over and over again every year.

Even if you want to have a trench in a fun colour or pattern, get a classic one too because when you are over the fun colour or pattern the classic trench will continue to serve you well.

I love how plaid can look totally punk and super conservative depending on how you wear it. Just look at the lady like skirt and the body con dress both in plaid above. I want to pick up some red plaid pants this winter. Plaid is the new flower print.

The leather biker. So cool no matter how you wear it. Work trousers, floral dress or ripped jeans. And it will only get better with age.

I am hoping to snag one of the Philip Lim for Target structured bags. I also love the slip on sneakers!
