Has style blogging gotten boring?

I have been thinking about the status of style and fashion blogging quite a bit lately as I have struggled to find inspiration as easily as I did before. I remember first stumbling upon the fashion blogging world in around 2011. Everything I saw was different and inspired me to try putting outfits together differently. Mixing prints was all the rage and most of the outfits didn’t feel out of reach yet.

Fashion blogging is ever evolving and some of the trends like them or not are driving the industry right now.

  1. Neutral everything – Don’t get me wrong I love a well executed neutral outfit. But I don’t wear neutrals all day errry day. Some bloggers only do black and white. Others wear cream and denim. I blame Instagram for this trend as having a cohesive grid is seen as beautiful. Every outfit needs to compliment the other squares. Personally I couldn’t wear the same colour palette day in and day out. And I don’t dress for instagram.
  2. Uninspired outfit remixes – I love a good outfit remix. Some super popular bloggers made their name remixing their outfits. Most of us want to know how to creatively re-wear our clothing a number of different ways to increase their longevity. However outfit remixes that are essentially the same outfit again and again are killing me right now. Showing me how to wear a blazer with 5 different pairs of jeans is not really an outfit remix. Show me how it works with dresses, skirts shorts even. Otherwise I am wondering if you really know how a remix works.
  3. Style bloggers turned Mommy bloggers – There seems to be quite the baby boom in the blogosphere lately. I totally understand that as our lives change our content does too. Style bloggers are incorporating more facets of themselves into their blogs and overall this is a good thing. However I have found all the baby content off the mark for myself since my kids are well older. They are kids not babies and I don’t plan on having more babies. So while I am happy for them and the babies sure are cute I am looking for style inspiration. Not family moments.
  4. Body Positive – I am thrilled that in the past few years that there have become more high profile size inclusive bloggers. As someone who regularly wears a size 12 it is great to see more girls with curves rocking the internets. I am all for body confidence. No one should hate themselves for their size. We are all a work in progress. But if those messages become a gimmick or sales pitch I am out. I want curvy girls to be recognized not solely for their ability to rock a swimsuit on instagram with confidence and garner a following with their you go girl messages. I want them to be recognized because they have great style. Full stop. Body positivity and inclusivity should be about seeing different girls whether they are bigger than a sample size or whatever as equally able to be part of the fashion conversation. Part of the conversation and be taken seriously as more than just a sales angle.

So what do you do to keep style blogging from getting stagnant? As a blogger and a reader? For me as a blogger just keep trying new outfits. Sure some stuff won’t work, but if you aren’t mixing and remixing, trying different brands and prints and fabrics, then you are stagnating.

As a blog reader I try to add new blogs to my feed, to follow on pinterest and bloglovin. I follow the super popular and the newbies too. I follow people from Canada, the US, Europe. All sizes and ages. I should get better following those who blog in a different language, but my comfort zone ends at French except for a few blogs that use English also. What I am saying is when what you are consuming starts to get boring or evolves in a different direction from you, change it up. Add something new. Drop the blogs that really aren’t serving you any longer. There is room for all of us and there is the right bloggers out there to inspire you again.

Amen! And *I'M* the blogger that I think has gotten boring! Ha. I've addressed it a couple times on my blog - I don't have a large wardrobe, I don't spend a lot of money on clothes, I don't dress fancy or super stylish...but I DO like to find ways to look...current and modern. And I don't want to bore people by showing the same items over and over again (even worn different ways). And my followers are lovely, saying they're happy to see a "real person" working with a reasonable budget and wardrobe, but I'm still concerned about boring them :-)

Like you, I miss the early days of "wardrobe remix," when it was just regular people creating so many different looks, being innovative and creative and sometimes crazy...but from their closets not from a Nordstrom sale! I guess it's hard to get the genie back in the bottle, but....this post has inspired me to try a little harder. Thanks!

I totally agree. So many blogs are like magazines now - more about new stuff as opposed to style inspiration.

I love your posts and style. You are way more confident and a risk taker than I am. I’d love some posts on how to go from blah/schlumpy to stylish. For the stay at home mom who has boobs and a busted out biscuit can (muffin top). I get in such a style rut in sweltering Vegas. Black shorts, black top. Black shorts, gray top. Black shorts... you get the idea. 😉 Thanks again for your fresh posts!

OOOh thanks for the ideas Stacey, I will definitely think up some posts for you and others like you! I find it hard getting dressed when it is stupid hot here too but thankfully those days are limited.
