Where to hang your stockings when you don’t have a fireplace

In our last house we had a fireplace. But even though we had that traditional spot to hang our stockings we didn’t hang them there. We didn’t want to put any nails in the mantle when we knew we were selling our home in the near future. And for a long time I thought the weighted stocking hangers were so expensive for what they were I never splurged.

Now in our new home we don’t have a fireplace at all. So every Christmas the question is where to hang your stockings when you don’t have a fireplace?

  1. Hang your stockings in the stairway – we started this tradition in our old home. We hang garland on the banister and decorate with various non breakable ornaments. Using the garland you can attach the stockings at any interval you need. Personally I liked this option at our old house that had a more open architecture with individual wickets. Now we have more of a closed staircase that is dry-walled. It makes hanging the stockings a bit more awkward.

  3. Hang your stockings on a dresser – This is my new favourite option. It doesn’t have to be a dresser even. Maybe you have a buffet that you decorate much like you would a mantel. Or an accent table under your TV. Regardless you can use weighted hooks or even contact hooks to hang the stockings. If you have knobs even those would work to hang the stockings too.
  4. Hang your stockings in the tree – I can see this playing out one of two ways.  Keep your tree minimal just lights and the stockings for decor. On the other hand you could just go over the top and put all your decorations on the tree and layer the stockings over top.
  5. Hang your stockings on your chair – If your family is anything like ours we all have our seats at the dinner table. Add a bit of extra personalisation though the holidays by hanging each of your stockings on your dining chairs.
  6. Hang your stockings on your door – I like the idea of taking Christmas decorations beyond the main rooms of the house and upstairs into our more personal spaces. Why not have everyone hang their stockings on their bedroom door. Fill the stockings and let early risers entertain themselves with their stockings finds until everyone else wakes up.
