Weleda Skin Food Review

I’ve heard rumblings about Weleda Skin food for years. Other bloggers raved about it. Some even compared it to the ultra pricey Le Mer. Living in Canada means I am always dealing with dry skin especially through the winter months. I tend to keep a range of moisturizers on hand for different levels of dryness and different parts of the body. My Weleda Skin Food Review will share what I think about this cult favourite and if it lives up to the hype.

Weleda Skin Food Review

Weleda Skin Food comes in two main formulations. The Original Ultra Rich Cream and the Skin Food Light. Plant based ingredients make this cream super hydrating. The ingredients are a mix of calendula, chamomile, beeswax and botanical oils. Formulated in 1926 and made in Germany, Weleda Skin Food has stood the test of time because it works.

The Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra Rich Cream is a thick slightly tacky moisturizer that is deeply hydrating. The tackiness likely comes from the beeswax that is part of the formulation. It takes time to work into the skin and leaves a dewy glow to the skin. It also takes some time to fully absorb into the skin.

There is a herbal smell to the cream. However as someone who gets headaches from perfumes this smell doesn’t bother me at all. It is mostly the calendula smell that reminds me of the Weleda body wash we used for my son’s sensitive skin when he was an infant.

So here’s the tea. It works. Like really works. You can go from having dry cracking heels to having soft supple heels with not too much product. A little goes a long way with this thick and rich moisturizing cream.

Personally I wouldn’t carry Weleda Skin Food in my purse as a quick moisturize on the go as I feel that this absorbs into the skin faster and doesn’t leave any residue even if Skin Food is slightly better for really dry skin.

Skin Food Original Ultra Rich vs Skin Food Light

Skin Food Light is what you would think it is a more light weight version of the original. It is almost like a watered down version although I have a feeling that isn’t really what it is but I am not a chemist. The original is a thick and rich cream that takes time to work into the skin. Skin Food Light has more of a lotion consistency as opposed to a rich cream.

They both have the same smell. Skin food light absorbs into the skin faster and doesn’t have any tackiness to it like the Original.

Weleda Skin Food (light and original) rivals my usual recommendation for winter skin which is First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream. I think Skin Food is slightly more deeply moisturizing but the Ultra Repair Cream absorbs faster and has no scent. I would have them all on hand for tackling dryness.

How to use Weleda Skin Food

Use it for really dry skin – Whether you suffer from eczema or just dry winter skin, slather on the Original Skin food formulation on all you dry spots. If you are giving yourself a home pedicure use Skin Food as your last step to give your heels some TLC. My hands look instantly healthier with this cream.

Use it as a night cream – now I tend to use gel moisturizers or The Water Cream because I find many creams too rich for my skin. Skin food is too rich for me to use on my face except for once in a while as a hydrating mask or if I was treating a dry patch. However if you tend to have dry skin I would recommend this as a rich night cream.

Use it as a cuticle cream – when you are massaging Skin Food into your dry hands don’t forget your fingers! Rub this cream into your cuticles to give them some TLC.

Use it as a face mask – Did you spend the day skiing and now you have windburn? Or had too much sun by the pool? Are you flying somewhere and want to do an in flight mask? Skin food is great as a hydrating mask to make sure you return your dry skin back to its healthier state.

Those that are much better with makeup than myself recommend to mix skin food with your foundation to create a tinted moisturizer or to use it as a highlighter because it gives that dewy glow.
