Art Can Change Everything; Buy Art not Kids

My daughter creates some sort of art on a daily basis. Her school folder is full of it at the end of the week. Lately she has been incorporating the letters and numbers she is learning to write into her drawings but ultimately she draws, stamps, stickers something every day. It is one of the things she does that really gets her super excited. She loves to tell us what her drawing is about and will go back to fix what doesn’t fit her vision.

My Daughter’s Splatter Art featured on our mantel.

What I love about her art is watching it progress and grow as she learns to do new things. What was once just scribbles on a page  now incorporates people, trees, letters and more. Her art much like a picture is a snapshot of her abilities at one point in time.

My son’s medium of choice at this time is Lego. He stands up shouting out “I MADE!” with his creation featured predominately out front. He is getting into colouring on the page but it can be hard for a 2 year old boy to stay on the page and markers aren’t allowed at this point because well they get everywhere other than the artwork.

Art has the ability to build us up, it can tear us down. It can reflect our mood, our society. It can inspire; art can change everything.

In fact the Buy Art Not Kids Art Auction is looking to connect the call to action that is housed within a piece of art with people who can not only inspire change much like a piece of art can but act and impact change. That is what the Buy Art Not Kids campaign is all about, using art to raise awareness and impact change. Specifically the auction will benefit Ratanak International, an established Canadian charity devoted to abolish Child sex trafficking in Cambodia.

I want all kids to have the opportunity to just be kids, and have the chance to doodle on a page, or build something with blocks that makes them run to their parents and say “I MADE!”

The event (April 4th, 2014) is a silent art auction to be hosted by the BANK committee of volunteers in partnership with Havergal College in Toronto. The event will feature live music, performance art, raffle prizes, sumptuous food, wine and most importantly a chance for you to purchase an array of incredible art by notable Canadian artists. Tickets are $75.

Not in Toronto or the GTA but you want to get involved? You can donate online. Find more details about this event HERE.

My daughter has just started to incorporate words and numbers into her drawings too. Her favorite is adding word bubbles coming out of the mouths of her highly-detailed stick figures! Thank you for your support. We hope to see you at the auction!
