Must have products for my grey hair

Last Updated on September 28, 2025 by Jane

I am coming up to the two year mark of my grey hair grow out. And with my recent chop I can say that I have fully grown out any traces of dye. Even with the last hair cut it was harder to see any remnants of dye but up close you could still find some. Part of this process was finding shampoos and products that work with my new hair colour. Just because I am not longer dying my hair doesn’t mean it is completely low maintenance. These are must have products for my grey hair.

Purple shampoo – one of the first things I did once I started seeing a significant amount of grow out was stock up on some purple shampoos. People with grey hair use purple shampoo to counteract the yellowing that can happen to white strands. The yellowing happens with dirt, product build up, sun exposure and hot product tools. Purple is opposite yellow on the colour wheel and offsets the yellow. But you have to be careful that you don’t leave it on too long otherwise you will look like the elderly ladies who have a purple rinse at the salon and come out with lavender hair.

In the graphic above I have shared three purple shampoos I have used and like plus three I want to try. The three that I have tried are from Dae, Schwarzkopf Goodbye Yellow and Loreal Ever Pure. The Dae and Schwarzkopf shampoos are a darker purple compared to the Loreal. What I like about the Loreal version is that it comes with a purple conditioner. Dae has the thickest consistency and a fruity scent. Goodbye Yellow has a thinner consistency with a smell like candy almost. The Loreal Ever Pure has a more floral scent and the consistency is somewhere between the two.

The three purple shampoos I would like to try are the shampoo bars from Green Room. These have a vibrant purple. So many purple shampoo bars are a light purple. I would like to try the Oribe Silverati because I really do love the Oribe mousse. I would also like to try the Kevin Murphy option because I love the smell of Kevin Murphy shampoos. I do find them a bit rich and I tend to break out along my neck when I use them. Still they smell great and my hair loves them.

Clarifying shampoo – I use a clarifying shampoo for the same reason I use the purple shampoos. Buildup can cause yellowing to the white strands. I usually start with the clarifying shampoo and follow up with a purple shampoo. The clarifying shampoo really deeply washing the hair and scalp and the purple shampoo will tone. The Ouai clarifying shampoo is my go to option right now.

Velcro rollers – I have fine hair and as such I tend to use things that help with volume. Velcro rollers are my go to to help with this. Velcro rollers aren’t something that you need for maintaining grey hair per sae but you should make sure that you are still doing your hair the way you like it. Don’t assume that if you have grey hair you have to style it a certain way.

Mousse – My fine hair can always use some help with volume. This is my favourite mousse. If you hair texture has changed with embracing your grey I would try adding some mousse to your life!

Conditioner bars – With fine hair I find that too much condition can really weight down my hair. Conditioner bars (this one is my favourite) are easier to avoid over conditioning. Also it reduces the amount of plastic because you are not getting a big plastic bottle.

Do you have any hair products that are must haves for grey hair?
