DIY Try: How to make a Tassel Necklace

Last Updated on September 24, 2016 by Jane

Tassels are a thing. You might have noticed them on everything from beach bags to sandals and more than anything necklaces. The boho tassel necklace was something I thought I could try and DIY since they didn’t look too complicated. This is how to make a tassel necklace that you are going to want to wear this summer.

I started out making the necklaces I wanted to embellish with tassels. I had the beads laying around from some older projects and chose to do an ombre patter where the colours sort of bleed into one another. I used wooden beads for both necklaces which makes for quick necklace making since the pattern was fairly simple and the larger holes are easy to thread.

So what you need to make these boho tassel necklaces is:

1. necklaces – to keep the boho feel either make them with wooden beads like these or semi precious beads like these.

2. Embroidery floss – yarn is too poufy for necklaces, the embroidery floss makes nice and neat tassels.

3. Scissors – for the obvious cutting of embroidery floss into a tassel

4. Beads – these are optional. I liked the look but you can also tie the tassel directly on the necklace. If you do choose the bead look you might want to have a needle handy if you need assistance threading the floss.

The first thing I did was go through the bag-o-embroidery floss to choose my colour combinations. I like using a contrasting colour to tie the tassel instead of a matching colour. Not all the colours had multiple versions of itself in the pack I chose but the pack is the best value option and you can get tassel crazy with so much floss!

I did one tassel (the pink one) using 2 packs of embroidery floss and one tassel (the green one) with one pack. Both look great so I would say use 2 packs if you are looking to create a fuller looking tassel.

Fold the embroidery floss lengthwise in half and tie together with a knot. This is the first part of making the tassel. Leave these threads hanging as you will need them to thread on the bead and tie to the necklace.

Next tie around the floss creating a bulb. Knot this tightly as well and then wrap around covering the knot. As I said above I chose a contrasting colour but you can match the colours if you want. You will need to tuck in the ends as you are wrapping so that there is nothing sticking out.

Once everything is tied you need to cut the end of the tassel. Try to do this as straight across as possible (not how I am showing the scissors in the picture!).

Once you have your tassel complete thread on your bead with the long ends from the first tie you made at the top of your tassel. Then simply tie onto your necklace!

This was a fun easy craft that turned out really well. It is definitely kid friendly although they would need some help in the making of the tassel depending on their age.

I am so pumped that I am going to have some fun tassel necklaces for my up coming vacation!
