Things to do in Quebec City

We just came back from our road trip to Quebec city. Even though we live just one province away I had never been to this gorgeous historical city. It was about time to wander the streets of a Canadian city that drips in European Charm. These are the Things to do in Quebec City.

Things to do in Quebec City

  1. Look in wonder at the Chateau Frontenac – While we may not have the castles that Europe does in Canada we do have some pretty impressive hotels. In fact the Chateau Frontenac is one of a few Chateau style hotels built by CP rail to encourage luxury travelers to venture to different parts of Canada. things to do in quebec cityThe Chateau Frontenac is perched on top of a cliff making it visible from many different vantage points from the city. If you are not staying at the Chateau Frontenac you can dine here if you want to get a peek inside. things to do in quebec city
  2. Wander Dufferin Terrace – If you have made it up to visit the Chateau Frontenac up close and personal you might as well wander the historic boardwalk that surrounds the hotel. The wide boardwalk features cannons, connects to parks and looks down on the lower town. things to do in quebec city
  3. Wander the Quartier Petit Champlain – filled with boutiques and restaurants this amazing historic section of Old Quebec is worth hours of your time if not a whole day. Directly across from the port and below the walled portion of the city this area is extremely vibrant but also very touristy. This is a great area to stop and sit while you people watch.things to do in quebec city
  4. Marvel at the birth place of Quebec City – Place Royal is where Samuel de Champlain opened the first trading post and is rich with the architecture of New France. things to do in quebec city
  5. Visit the Museum of Civilization – There are a few different Museums within Quebec City. This one was a particular favourite of our kids. They loved playing in the chiens et chats section and searching for keys. This summer there is even a Tintin exhibit that is a must visit. There is also plenty to learn about Quebec history from the First Nations to modern day.things to do in quebec city
  6. Take a Ferry – Hop a ferry and cruise the St. Lawrence River. You can hope the commuter ferry to Levis or take a longer pleasure cruise. If you are looking for an amazing picture of the Chateau Frontenac this is a must!things to do in quebec city
  7. See the Falls – just ten minutes outside of Quebec City are the Montmorency Falls. Taller than Niagara Falls these are sight to behold. Take the cable car to the top or walk the stairs to the suspension bridge across the falls. things to do in quebec city
  8. Wander the Plains of Abraham – The Plains of Abraham are the historic site of a battle between the French and English. The one in which saw the succession of New France from the French to the English. It is still home to an active military installation, the oldest in Canada. Walk along the wall. Quebec City is the only remaining walled city in North America north of Mexico. poutine quebec city
  9. Eat Poutine – Poutine has become a popular dish even outside of Quebec but it is a must when you are in the province that created it!things to do in quebec
  10. Visit Parliament – Quebec City is the capitol of the province of Quebec and as such is home to the National Assembly of Quebec. Take a tour of the building or just wander the neighbourhood. The parliament building has 22 statues of important people in Quebec’s history. The City Hall is also an amazing building older than the parliament building and is found in Old Quebec. things to do in quebec cityQuebec City has so much to offer. For North American’s is is a chance to visit the closest thing to a European city without leaving the continent. Even if you don’t take a tour you can just wander Old Quebec and soak up the charm. The things to do in Quebec City are just the tip of the iceberg. There are other neighbourhoods I haven’t mentioned. Plus the winter season brings around more things to do like skiing, skating and more. In fact Quebec City, while cold is just as beautiful to visit in winter. We were in Quebec City for a couple of days but I am already thinking about what areas to spend more time in when we return. We took our kids who are 8 and 5. They enjoyed the trip especially riding the double decker tour bus. things to do in quebec cityWhat do you think of the things to do in Quebec City? Have you been? What would you add to this list?

So grateful for your photo tour through Quebec City. It has been a great resource to me as I plan my trip there in September! It didn't seem like any of the things you mentioned charged admission, is that true? (other than the bus tour)

So there is a fee to get into the Museum. We paid the family rate which I remember being affordable. You can also go and come back later in the day which we did. The hop on hop off tour we did included the boat tour, but otherwise that would cost. The poutine we had to buy as well obviously.

Much of the rest of what I list is simply visiting historic neighbourhoods and parks in the old walled part of the city so there is little to no cost. Just getting around which is why we used the hop on hop off tour. You can even get free tours of the National Assembly of Quebec. Just check out their own website for more details.

We did have to pay for parking because our hotel was not in the old historic district.
