Over the Christmas break I had the chance to test out the Sodastream Power system that includes the reusable 1 L bottle, the water maker and a 60 L CO2 carbonator. I was also given some new flavours to try out including the Black Currant Lime flavour pictured above.

Sodastream Review:

The Sodastream Power system is extremely easy to get all set up. All that is involved is popping off the back cover and screwing in the Carbonator canister. The power adapter also plugs in here as well. Once this is all attached just place the back cover back on to maintain the sleek look.

The water maker easily fits in with all your modern kitchen appliances with the black and chrome details.

To make carbonated water all you have to do is fill your Sodastream bottle to the line (don’t over fill or else you will have a mess on your hands!) and choose your level of carbonation.

For my pop I chose the highest level of carbonation which equates to what you would buy in the store assuming it is fresh and not bottles that have lost their fizz.

Once you have added bubbles to your water you can add some of the Sodastream flavours.

I haven’t tried very many flavours of the Sodastream syrups so I can’t comment on whether they make a good facsimile to your brand name pop. But I did try the Blackcurrant lime flavour and was pleasantly surprised. It was fruty, somewhat reminiscent of the pink Schewps that was popular back in the day.

For my first time I made the Blackcurrant lime Sodastream full strength, which I think the next time around I would try it at half strength as I did find it quite sweet. Also I made the mistake of pouring in the flavour all at once which reacted with the fizz to overflow. I should have added the flavour slowly so as to minimize any wastage.

I think that is one of the perks of the Sodastream system is that you can fine tune your sodas to your preference, giving something a hint of flavour. In fact you could just drink the carbonated water plain or use some juice to flavour the water. sodastream review, blackcurrant lime

So do you need to add a Sodastream to the list of appliances you need for your home? That depends.

The Sodastream system cuts down on all the garbage associated with buying soda on the regular. It also allows you to make more pop any time you need it so it can come in quite handy when you are entertaining and are getting low on whatever your guests are drinking. If you are an avid sparkling water fan or have a bar that you want to add your own carbonation machine to it just makes sense.

However if you are accustomed to a specific brand of pop or tend to buy your soda on sale you might not end up using the Sodastream and the flavours all that much.

Sodastream is available at a number of different retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Candian Tire and Hudson’s Bay. These retailers also sell more of the 1L bottles and the Sodastream syrups to make water exciting!
