I think the reason this double plaid look works is because even through the back ground colours are opposites the plaid colours are the same. If you are doing the same sort of thing with a double plaid look make sure that there are enough commonalities in the plaids for them to tie together.
What I like about this type of look is that it is extremely festive without being too formal. This would work for a Christmas dinner or even a family function.
Not feeling the double plaid? You could always layer over a thin red sweater to break it up and make the double plaid outfit less obvious.
