BEHR Designing My Way Bathroom Update

This past winter we (and by we I mean my husband mostly) finished our basement. It was time to have a space that could be more recreational and a place other than the floor in our family room for all the toys.

Part of the project was finishing the basement bathroom which has turned into my favourite bathroom in the entire house. I think this is because it the one bathroom that we designed ourselves and is really true to our own aesthetic.

We repurposed an old entertainment unit that we bought for our first house as part of bathroom storage. The dark wood colour really didn’t go with the clean white and grey colour pallet of the bathroom so when Behr asked me to be part of their DIY project I knew that I wanted to paint this piece to better fit our vision of a clean white bathroom.

The first step was to pick the perfect colour. I wanted to keep everything clean and crisp so I went with a white but it can be so hard to find the right white. I didn’t want the white to be stark and cold, but a bit creamier and warm without being too yellow.

Behr has this great ColourSmart® app that allows you to pick a colour and see what it looks like in actual rooms. In fact, I picked a number of different colours that were all similar and then placed them on the different walls within the picture to really compare what they looked like. This made it so easy to see what whites were closer to beige, which were too stark white and which was exactly what we were looking for. Because of this app and being able to compare and contrast the shades I was confident sending my husband to The Home Depot® to pick up the paint colour without me going along!

The shade of white we picked was Ballerina Beauty (MQ3-8) and it is part of the BEHR MARQUEE® One Coat Hide Collection.

behr marquee paint reviewWhat makes the BEHR MARQUEE Collection special is that it is a paint and primer in one, promising one coat hide **. After painting the entire basement with primer and two coats of paint I welcomed a chance to quicken up the whole painting process. BEHR MARQUEE is also a durable paint looking freshly painted for longer which, with two young kids at home, is a great feature.

That said painting furniture isn’t the same as painting new drywall. The finish on the wood unit needed some prep work before we could go ahead and paint with MARQUEE.

I set up my workspace with a drop sheet and used my husbands power sander to sand all the surfaces I was going to paint. Some of the faces were not really conducive to power sanding so I did my best to hand sand these sections.

Then it was time to paint with MARQUEE. We used a mini paint tray with a small roller brush for most of the project. We also used some sponge brushes to get at the corners and any other harder to paint sections.

The paint is extremely thick, even thicker than other Behr paints I have used. Where I had done a really good job sanding I can say without a doubt this was one coat painting.

I have done furniture painting projects before and usually I am looking at about three coats of paint to get good coverage, especially over darker wood. Where I had sanded properly I was able to get the same coverage with one coat of BEHR MARQUEE. The finish even looks like you have spent a lot of time painting multiple coats!

I am really happy with the way the project turned out. Now we have extra storage right in the bathroom for towels and toiletries without having to run upstairs whenever we need shampoo or toilet paper. Plus, the unit now looks like it is part of the bathroom instead of standing out as something we just had hanging around.
