Trend Alert; The Coatigan

When Le Catch blogger Marlien Rentmeester chatted about the coatigan on her blog last week I knew she was onto something. I also wondered what the heck a coatigan was and if it was the same as a sweater coat, or if this was the beginning of something new.

While researching this post I noticed a distinct difference between the coatigan and the sweater coat.

The sweater coat has been popular for a few seasons and is a more casual style that looks very sweater-like. The sweater is elongated and drapey so that it can be thrown over an outfit much like a coat. It is also tends to be obviously knitted.

The coatigan on the other hand especially from far away looks like a coat. It has a more solid structure and coat like details (double breasted and leather trims). It isn’t until you get close up you can tell it is a sweater and this could be due to a finer gauge knit or that it is boiled wool or boucle.

Of the two the coatigan gives an air of sophistication.
